He was born to a rich family of sardars (jagirdar) from Dhingi village in Patiala, Punjab. He attended the Doon Public School in Dehradoon. His father's name was S. Amrik Singh Thind (Dhingi). He has two sons. "Bismil" was the lyricist of many Hindi movies like 'kala Chasma' in 1962. His song, Gulabi Ankhen Jo Teri Dekhi, was played in the movie The Train played on Rajesh Khanna and sung by Mohhamad Rafi. His most recognized songs in India are Dharmendra Deol, Jagjit Singh, Mohhamad Rafi, Mahinder Singh, Mehmood, Kishore Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Raj Kapoor, and Shami Kapoor. He is affiliated with the Congress Party of India. He also produced Hindi movies. His production house's name was "Sangam Production House". It made many documentary movies. In 1984, he produced the documentary film "Nanak Sabh Ka Sanjha," which was awarded a "Best Documentary Movie of The Year". After 1991 he disappeared from the public. His death is unconfirmed.
